Albert Kahn-designed home in Ann Arbor offers trademark balance and luxury

ANN ARBOR, MI – A home designed by Albert Kahn, the legendary architect who brought buildings like Hill Auditorium, Angell Hall and Burton Memorial Tower to the University of Michigan campus, recently was listed in Ann Arbor.

The home at 2101 Hill Street, which was listed for $2.37 million and is now under contract, features many of the trademark design characteristics Kahn is noted for in his residential, commercial and industrial buildings, Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices listing agent Jeffrey Post said.

The 7,100-square-foot classic Georgian Revival home features seven bedrooms and seven bathrooms that showcase the proportion, balance, style and elegance that are found in many of the buildings that made Kahn one of Detroit’s most noted building designers, Post said.

The home, located in the Ann Arbor Hills neighborhood, is MLive’s House of the Week. Homes from across the state are featured every Wednesday.

“When something like this comes along, everybody’s radar goes off,” Post said. “The rarity of this is special.”

Designed by Kahn in 1913 for University of Michigan professor George Patterson and his wife on land that was previously a fruit orchard, the home was later owned by the Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity. It has since been owned by three other families and has two acres of mature trees and gardens.

Large windows facing the south in the living room and dining room bring in an abundance of natural light during the winter months. When the sun changes position in the summer months, its design keeps the property comfortable and cool, Post said.

The main floor of the home features a spacious living/music room, providing a large space for entertaining guests. Multiple wood-burning fireplaces are located throughout the home.

The master kitchen was updated by the home’s most recent owners, Post said, and features a Viking Range and Sub-Zero refrigerator.

“What each owner attempted to do, and I think they did fairly successfully, was retain the character of the original house, but modernize it enough so that’s its comfortable for the current occupant,” Post said.
